Preparing Your Child for School Transitions

Transitions can be challenging for neurodiverse children. With preparation, you can help make school changes smoother.

Types of School Transitions:

- Starting school for the first time - Moving to a new classroom or teacher - Transitioning between schools - Moving from primary to secondary school

Preparation Strategies:

1.

Visit the New Environment

- Tour the school multiple times before the transition.

2.

Create Visual Supports

- Photo books of the new school, classroom, and teachers.

3.

Practice the Routine

- Walk through the new schedule at home.

4.

Meet Key People

- Arrange meetings with teachers and support staff.

5.

Social Stories

- Create stories about what to expect.

Working with the School:

- Share your child's strengths and challenges - Discuss accommodations needed - Establish communication channels - Request a transition plan if needed

During the Transition:

- Maintain consistent home routines - Allow extra processing time - Celebrate small successes - Stay connected with teachers

Remember: Every child adjusts at their own pace. Be patient and supportive.
