5 Communication Strategies That Actually Work

Communication is more than words. For neurodiverse children, expressing needs and understanding others may require different approaches.
Strategy 1: Visual Supports
Visual aids help make abstract concepts concrete: picture schedules, First-Then boards, choice boards, and social stories.
Strategy 2: Give Processing Time
Wait 10-15 seconds after asking a question. Avoid repeating immediately. Use a calm, patient tone.
Strategy 3: Simplify Your Language
Use short, clear sentences. Give one instruction at a time. Be literal and specific.
Strategy 4: Follow Their Lead
Join their interests and activities. Comment on what they're doing rather than questioning.
Strategy 5: Alternative Communication (AAC)
AAC supports communication through PECS, communication apps, sign language, or communication boards.
The goal isn't perfect speech—it's meaningful connection. Celebrate every attempt to communicate.
